VGU Library successfully hosted its hybrid workshop titled “Leveraging Research Metrics and Bibliometrics: Driving Strategic University Impact, Rankings, and Researcher Success” on December 20, 2024. The event brought together academic leaders, researchers, and library professionals to explore practical strategies for advancing research management and dissemination through bibliometric tools and analyses.
Key Highlights of the Workshop
The workshop was inaugurated with welcoming remarks, followed by insightful presentations from distinguished speakers:

Dr. Pham Hung Hiep, Director at Thanh Do University, presented “Building and Managing Research Strategy through Bibliometric Analysis”, highlighting how institutions can strategically manage their research outputs by leveraging bibliometric tools. Using SciVal, he demonstrated how metrics like scholarly output, citation impact, and collaboration indicators could guide institutional leaders in decision-making. He also discussed the importance of aligning research strategies with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and shared practical examples of using bibliometric data for improving performance in university rankings. His session provided a comprehensive guide for institutional leaders to foster impactful research and collaborations

Identifying Research Problems and Gaps through Bibliometric Analysis: A Practical Guide for Researchers and Scholars: Dr. Pham Hung Hiep and Mr. Dinh Hai Luong, Editor of the Journal of Educational Sciences, Vietnam National Institute of Educational Sciences, focused on utilizing bibliometric analysis to identify research gaps and emerging trends.
Mr. Luong focused on the practical applications of bibliometric analysis for researchers and scholars to:
- Identify knowledge gaps in their fields of study.
- Analyze the evolution of research topics using bibliometric maps and visualization tools (e.g., VOSviewer).
- Enhance research design by targeting underexplored areas of inquiry.
By analyzing citation networks, they showed how researchers can uncover impactful topics and identify potential collaborators. This session was particularly beneficial for researchers and scholars aiming to align their research with global priorities while addressing local challenges.

Metrics for Research Impact: A practical guide for researchers and scholars: Ms. Nguyen Thi Bich Ngoc, School of Hospitality and Tourism, Hue University, offered practical advice on using metrics to assess research impact.
Ms. Ngoc delved into research metrics, explaining their significance and applications in academic performance evaluation. Key takeaways included:
- Types of Research Metrics:
- Quantitative Metrics: Citation counts, h-index, journal impact factor (JIF).
- Altmetrics: Social media mentions, downloads, and online engagements.
- Choosing the Right Metric: Practical tips for selecting appropriate metrics based on research goals, disciplines, and target audiences.
- Improving Research Visibility: Techniques such as open-access publishing and social media promotion to enhance visibility and citation potential.
This session provided actionable advice for researchers aiming to maximize their research impact and strengthen their academic profiles.

Hardening Metrics for Tracking Research Impact at Singapore Management University: Ms. Yeo Pin Pin, Head of Research Services, Singapore Management University Libraries, presented a case study on tracking research impact at her institution.
Ms. Pin shared Singapore Management University’s approach to using research metrics for institutional growth, including:
- Developing institutional dashboards for tracking research outputs.
- Using bibliometric tools to support funding applications and stakeholder engagement.
- Enhancing collaboration opportunities through network analysis and citation patterns.
Her presentation underscored the role of libraries and research offices in empowering researchers with accessible tools and training to make the most of bibliometric data.

In the closing session, Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Tri – Library Division, Vietnamese-German University, presented “Advancing Research Dissemination and Institutional Publications“, addressed challenges and opportunities in research dissemination . She highlighted the importance of institutional repositories and open-access platforms for maximizing research reach. Furthermore, she discussed strategies for enhancing publication quality and increasing citation counts. Her session underscored how institutional support systems can drive impactful research dissemination and collaboration
The workshop included dedicated Q&A sessions after each presentation, where participants actively engaged with the speakers to explore practical applications of bibliometric tools. The discussions delved into topics such as identifying high-impact journals, fostering cross-border collaborations, and aligning research outputs with institutional goals.

The event was deemed a great success, offering valuable knowledge and practical strategies for researchers and institutions seeking to enhance their research impact. The workshop underscored the importance of leveraging metrics and bibliometrics to drive strategic university impact, improve rankings, and foster researcher success.
This workshop also reflects VGU’s commitment to equipping academic professionals with the knowledge and tools to navigate the evolving landscape of research evaluation and dissemination. By leveraging bibliometric insights, VGU aims to bolster its contribution to global academia and foster impactful collaborations.
