Lecture 1: Trends and Developments in Information and Digital Literacy Programmes from Mr Rajendra Munoo – Head, Instruction & Learning services, SMU Libraries
In this enlightening session, Mr. Munoo provided an overview of the evolving landscape of information literacy. He discussed the challenges and opportunities that libraries face in adapting to new technologies and shifting educational paradigms. His insights emphasized the critical role librarians play as educators, guiding users in navigating the complexities of information access in a digital world.
Lecture 2: Digital Literacy: What You Need to Know
Following a short break, participants engaged in a highly interactive Knowledge Café, where they discussed their experiences and knowledge gained from the flipped learning online course titled Digital Literacy: What You Need to Know. This session encouraged participants to define digital literacy in their own contexts and identify its various components, fostering a collaborative learning environment.
Lecture 3: Case Study: ILD Programmes at SMU Libraries
In this session, Mr. Munoo shared a detailed case study on the information literacy development (ILD) programs at SMU Libraries. Participants learned about best practices in designing, implementing, and evaluating information literacy programs tailored for diverse audiences, including undergraduates and postgraduates. This practical approach allowed attendees to benchmark existing practices within their institutions and identify opportunities for engagement and collaboration.
Workshop: Information Research Skills for Academic Schools from Ms. Tran Ngoc Anh Thy and Mr. Trinh Minh Phuc from RMIT University Vietnam
This presentation focused on the topics of information literacy and digital literacy, highlighting how these skills support students in navigating and succeeding in today’s digital environment. The presentation covered three key areas.
First, Mr. Trinh Minh Phuc introduced Tailored Workshops for Assignments, explaining how these workshops are specifically designed to meet the needs of different courses, especially from faculties such as Business and Communication & Design. These workshops assist students in conducting research, from finding credible resources to properly citing them, while ensuring the assignment requirements are met.
Next, Ms. Tran Ngoc Anh Thy shared insights from the Generative AI for Learning and Research Workshop, discussing how students can integrate artificial intelligence tools such as Bing, Val, and other practical applications to enhance their academic success. As AI becomes increasingly prevalent, these workshops help students understand how to leverage AI for research, improve their writing, and increase productivity. The liaison librarians also address important ethical considerations surrounding the use of AI in academic work.
Lastly, Ms. Thy presented their Live Workshops, which cover a wide range of essential academic skills. These workshops are held at the beginning of each new semester, helping students develop the skills they need from the start.
In conclusion, the discussion highlighted how information literacy and digital literacy are interconnected and essential for academic success in the digital age. While digital literacy equips students with the tools to effectively engage with technology, information literacy ensures that they can critically evaluate and ethically use the information they encounter.
